I must say, I MUCH prefer to visit the hot spots in Europe during October… climate crisis means they’re all still pretty hot (please note the sarcasm), the crowds are gone and prices dropped. If you’re chasing sunshine but want to skip the summer chaos, October in Europe offers a sweet spot. And if you’re trying to work out the best place to travel in Europe in October or just want the honest hottest places in Europe in October (not the vague “nice weather” version), I pulled the real average highs for the destinations I keep recommending and ranked them properly. “Sunny” and “hot” are not the same promise and I don’t want you landing somewhere in a jumper.
Quick caveat before we start: European weather has gone a bit unhinged in recent years (London hit higher temperatures than parts of Spain this year and it wasn’t the first time! My local park had completely dried out, the mallards in the pond had to be rehomed!). So treat these as long-term averages, not guarantees. But averages are still the best steer you’ll get for planning ahead and determine whether you’ll be on a beach or in a cardigan.

Hottest Places in Europe in October, Ranked
If you’re after the single warmest place in Europe in October, here’s a table for you. This is how they stack up by average October high. I’ve included sea temperature too, since that’s usually the actual deciding factor for a beach trip.

Worth saying: this isn’t a ranking of which place is best, just which is hottest. The Algarve comes last on temperature and is still one of my favourite places on this list!
Cyprus
Why It’s the Hottest
Cyprus consistently has the warmest October of anywhere in Europe, with highs around 27°C and sea temperatures still comfortable enough for a proper swim. It’s also one of the few places on this list where you can realistically expect wall-to-wall sunshine for a full week.
What to Do
Nissi Beach is the obvious pull, but the Troodos Mountains are worth a day if you want a break from the heat, and Paphos has some of the best-preserved ancient ruins in the Mediterranean. October is also a good window for diving, since the water’s warm and the summer crowds have gone.
What to Eat
Halloumi (obviously, but it’s genuinely better there), souvlaki, sheftalia and a proper meze spread. Pair it with Commandaria if you like a sweet wine.

Andalusia, Spain
Why It’s Nearly as Hot
Andalusia holds onto summer weather deep into October and Seville and Cadiz in particular barely register that autumn has started. I went in early October and it felt like the season hadn’t changed at all!
What to Do
Tour the Alhambra in Granada, the Mezquita in Córdoba and, if you’re in Seville, the evenings are cooler and the city alive with diners enjoying their tapas. October is also grape harvest season if you want to combine it with a vineyard visit.

What to Eat
Gazpacho or salmorejo depending on how hungry you are, grilled sardines and tapas eaten outside for as long as the light holds. In Seville, La Brunilda is the ultimate best place for tapas. My brother recommended it to me and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it since my visit.

Why It Stays Warm
Malta gets up to eight hours of sunshine a day even in October, with highs around 25°C, making it one of the most reliable picks on this list if you want heat without gambling on it.
What to Do
Valletta is a UNESCO-listed city that’s genuinely walkable in an afternoon, the Blue Lagoon is worth the boat trip even out of season, and Mdina’s medieval streets are far quieter than in summer. If your dates line up, Notte Bianca is a city-wide culture and music festival worth building a trip around.
What to Eat
Pastizzi, rabbit stew, and ftira, which is Malta’s answer to a flatbread sandwich and better than it sounds.

Sicily, Italy
Why It’s Still Beach Weather
Sicily sits in the mid-20s through October, which is enough for beach days without the peak-season crowds pushing you off the sand.
What to Do
Climb Mount Etna if you don’t mind an early start, visit the ancient ruins at Agrigento and head to Cefalù or San Vito Lo Capo for the actual beach time. Palermo’s markets are worth a half day on their own.
If you’re a White Lotus fan, there are plenty of film locations to visit! Just maybe don’t get on a boat with people you just met…
What to Eat
Arancini, caponata, cannoli, and whatever the day’s seafood catch is. October’s also a decent window for vineyard visits if you’re basing yourself inland.
Crete, Greece
Why It’s Still Warm Enough
Crete holds steady around 23-24°C through October, with the sea still swimmable and a fraction of the summer crowds.
What to Do
The Palace of Knossos, the Samaria Gorge if you’re up for a proper hike and Elafonissi Beach for the pink sand. It’s a big island, so a road trip through the mountain villages is worth building in extra days for.
What to Eat
Dakos, fresh seafood, and traditional lamb dishes. October also happens to be olive harvest season, so it’s a good time for oil tastings if that’s your thing.
Algarve, Portugal
Why It Still Counts
The Algarve is the coolest on this list at around 21°C, but that’s still warmer than most of the UK gets in July and the Atlantic being a bit brisker doesn’t stop most people swimming. I’ve been there in early October before and it still felt like summer. (my Uber driver did say I was lucky because it had been raining a few days before!)
What to Do
Ponta da Piedade’s cliffs, a boat trip into the Benagil Cave and sunset over the cliffs at Praia da Marinha. Lagos and Tavira are both worth a full day if you want beach time with a proper town attached.

What to Eat
Seafood cataplana, grilled octopus and pastéis de nata with an espresso, ideally more than once a day. October is also fig and almond season.

FAQ: Hottest Places in Europe in October
Cyprus, Andalusia in southern Spain, Malta, Sicily and Crete all reliably sit in the low-to-high 20s through October, making them the most consistently hot places in Europe in October.
For heat, stick to the ranking above. But October is also a strong month more broadly for places to visit in Europe generally, since shoulder-season prices and thinner crowds apply well beyond just the hot destinations.
For heat specifically, Cyprus. For the best all-round trip (heat plus a proper city to explore), Andalusia. If you want warm without full intensity, the Algarve.

In southern Europe and the Mediterranean islands, yes. Northern and central Europe have properly moved into autumn by October, but the south holds onto summer weather well into the month, especially in the first half.
The Algarve is your best bet, warm enough for beach days at around 21°C without the more intense heat you’d get further into the Mediterranean. Or even further up in Portugal like Lisbon and Porto if you’re more into a city break.
It’s one of the better times, in my humble opinion. You get most of the heat without peak summer prices or crowds and it’s noticeably more comfortable for sightseeing than the height of summer.
Generally yes, since it’s shoulder season. Flights and accommodation tend to be cheaper than July and August, particularly if you avoid UK half-term week.
Final Thoughts
If you want the safest bet for heat, Cyprus wins outright. If you want heat plus a city that’s genuinely worth exploring, Andalusia is hard to beat. And if you’d rather have warm-but-not-scorching with a slower pace, the Algarve is still one of my favourite places on this entire list despite ranking last on the thermometer.
