Bavaria, Germany
Best Places to Visit in Bavaria in Autumn
Bavaria is probably the most beautiful part of Germany! I’ve been there in summer and autumn and their fall season is…*chef’s kiss*. Explore Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Fussen and Mittenwald for alpine villages surrounded by mountains and forests in full autumn bloom. Drive along the Romantic Road for sweeping views of colourful landscapes and iconic castles like Neuschwanstein.

Autumn Festivals and Events in Bavaria
Oktoberfest in Munich ends in early October, but other events like the Volkstrachtenfest in Berchtesgaden and Federweisserfest in Würzburg keep the festive spirit going through autumn.
Traditional Bavarian Foods to Try in Autumn
Enjoy hearty dishes like venison stew, pumpkin soup, and Zwetschgendatschi (plum cake) in traditional Bavarian taverns. Autumn menus also feature locally sourced wild mushrooms and seasonal beer. And, of course, don’t forget the schnitzel and pork knuckles! Ooohh and käsespatzle!! And for cake, Prinzregententorte, a traditional Bavarian and German torte made from thin layers of genoise sponge and frosted with a dark chocolate creme mousseline. Or Bienenstitch! It’s two layers of yellow cake, a vanilla cream filling and a crunchy gooey honey almond topping.
Ugh, SO many delicious foods to try in Bavaria!
Outdoor Activities in Bavaria During Autumn
Hike the Partnach Gorge for a spectacular view of waterfalls framed by golden leaves or take a scenic train ride into the Bavarian Alps for jaw-dropping panoramas. If you haven’t been yet, visit Füssen and the world famous Neuschwanstein Castle.
Hallstatt and Salzkammergut, Austria
Why Visit Hallstatt in Autumn
If you don’t know what I’m talking about, I can guarantee you’ve been Hallstatt on social media. It’s been making the rounds for a few years, especially with some claiming it was the inspiration for Frozen’s Arendelle. They got so popular they started having a problem of overtourism so I really recommend you visit at low season.
I can’t remember now because I watched it a while ago but I think it appeared in a scene in Hunters too! Have you seen that show on Prime? Season 1 was incredible! Season 2 went downhill so I never finished…
Hallstatt’s lakeside charm becomes even more magical in autumn. The crowds ease and the vibrant foliage mirrored in the still lake makes for surreal photos and peaceful walks.

Best Things to Do in Hallstatt in Autumn
Take the funicular to the World Heritage Skywalk, cruise across Hallstatter See and hike the nearby Dachstein trails. Enjoy salt mine tours or explore alpine villages like Bad Ischl.
What to Eat in Hallstatt During Autumn
Try roast goose, Maroni (chestnuts), pumpkin soup and seasonal pastries. Spa towns like Bad Ischl also serve therapeutic local waters and alpine herbal teas perfect for chilly days.
Travel Tips for Autumn in Hallstatt
Visit early to mid-October to catch peak foliage. Book lakeview stays in advance for the best sunrise scenes. (bonus tip: I use a FREE app called SunCalc to check exactly where the sun is going to rise or set, especially on my travels!)
Paris, France
Why Paris is Beautiful in Autumn
Paris is obviously special any time of year! I’ve been there 5 or 6 times (just a 2hr train ride from London!) and, I have to say, the first 3 visits, I didn’t get it. Didn’t like, didn’t get it. Fourth time was the charm. I’ll say though, summer can be scorching hot and PACKED so I’d much rather go during the fall.
Stroll through Luxembourg Gardens or along the Seine as amber leaves fall. The golden glow of autumn light over Paris’s rooftops is unbeatable. Outdoor cafes remain lively, and the air smells of roasted chestnuts and buttery pastries.
Autumn Events and Festivals in Paris
Attend the Fête des Vendanges de Montmartre (October) for wine tastings and parades or take a foggy Seine cruise for autumn romance.
Seasonal Foods to Try in Paris in Autumn
Indulge in fig tarts, coq au vin and wild mushroom risottos. Pair with hot mulled wine or a café crème while people-watching on a terrace. Don’t skip the french onion soup!
Indoor Attractions for Rainy Autumn Days in Paris
Head to Shakespeare and Company bookstore, sip wine at intimate bars in Le Marais or visit Musée de l’Orangerie for impressionist masterpieces bathed in autumn light. I know summer is usually when normal people think of ice cream but, in my family, it’s any holiday. So if you fancy trying one of the best ice creams ever, head to Bachir! There’s one right at the bottom of the Sacre Cœur and one in Rambuteau.
Edinburgh, Scotland
Why Edinburgh is a Great Autumn Destination
Regular readers will know, I absolutely worship Edinburgh! I’ve recommended it here many times and I always will. It’s perfect any time of the year. Well, maybe a little too windy and cold in the winter…but the vibes are immaculate!
Historic Edinburgh is full of misty streets and glowing trees. Holyrood Park, Princes Street Gardens and the Meadows turn into blankets of red and gold.
Halloween Events in Edinburgh
Edinburgh’s Celtic roots make it an ideal Halloween destination. Attend the Samhuinn Fire Festival or join ghost tours through the Old Town’s haunted closes.

Why Visit the Loire Valley in Autumn
A few autumns ago my boyfriend and I drove all the way from London down to Val d Loire to spend a weekend with my brother and his wife who were travelling around France. I think it took us about 7hrs each way just to spend about 24hrs with them! But we had a great time.
In the fall the vineyards explode with colour and activity. Wine harvests are in full swing and you can taste the freshest vintages right at the source.

Transylvania, Romania
Why Transylvania is One of the Best Autumn Destinations
Transylvania is definitely one of the best places to visit in Europe in autumn! Not only you get the beautiful golden foliage, but also you’re in Darcula’s country for spooky season! Famous for its medieval castles and dense forests, Transylvania looks straight out of a gothic fairytale during the fall. Its misty hills and vibrant foliage create an atmospheric backdrop for autumn travel.

Autumn Travel Tips for Transylvania
Rent a car for flexibility. Bring warm layers as temperatures can drop quickly in mountain areas, especially by late October.
Lake Bled, Slovenia
Why Lake Bled is a Stunning Autumn Destination
I feel like Bled’s becoming more and more popular with the years so better get there quick! The emerald-green lake surrounded by golden-orange forests is postcard-perfect in autumn. With fewer tourists, you can enjoy peaceful boat rides and walks around the lake in near solitude.
Best Things to Do in Lake Bled in Autumn
Row or take a pletna boat to Bled Island, visit Bled Castle and hike to the Ojstrica viewpoint for panoramic views. Try thermal baths in nearby resorts for a warm break from the crisp air.
Foods to Try in Lake Bled
Taste the famous Bled cream cake along with autumnal Slovenian dishes like pumpkin soup, roasted meats, and gibanica (layered pastry).

Switzerland
Why Visit Switzerland in Autumn
Switzerland is another one that’s absolutely stunning all year round! I’ve been meaning to write a post just about Switzerland for a while so stayed tune for it. Maybe subscribe to the blog?! In autumn it offers a striking mix of colourful forests, alpine peaks and peaceful lakes. It’s shoulder season, so travel is quieter and the views are arguably some of the best in Europe. Although I have seen Blausee doing the rounds on the ‘gram so it might be getting a little more popular for a little lake…

Head to the Lauterbrunnen Valley for waterfalls surrounded by fall colours. Explore Lucerne’s Old Town or take a scenic train ride on the Bernina or Glacier Express. Hike in Zermatt with views of the Matterhorn framed by golden larches.

Try seasonal favourites like cheese fondue, rösti and chestnut desserts. October is also a great time for wine tasting in Swiss vineyards, especially in regions like Lavaux.
Autumn Travel Tips for Switzerland
October offers crisp air and clear skies. Bring layers for mountain altitudes and consider a Swiss Travel Pass for scenic trains and local transport.
Final Thoughts on Visiting Europe in Autumn
Honestly, the two main points for me are: fewer crowds + autumn foliage! And these are some of the best places to visit in Europe in autumn in my humble opinion. From cosy pub nights in Scotland to misty castle views in Romania and chateaus in France, the experiences are as colourful as the landscapes.
