This is a post about some of the best European winter sun destinations.
Look, I know in a few months I’ll be whinging about the cold but, right now, I’m REALLY looking forward to the cosy season, hoodies, candles and curling up with a book and my new Halloween blanket. I’m just not used to such a hot summer in England! Comes January, though, I’ll be begging for some sunshine. So as I get ready to plan an European winter sun trip, I thought I’d share with you some of the best winter sun destinations in Europe.
When the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, escaping to somewhere warm in Europe can be the perfect remedy. From sunny islands to coastal towns with mild winter weather, there are plenty of destinations that offer blue skies, outdoor cafés and even a dip in the sea in the middle of winter.

So let’s get into it, here are some of the best European winter sun destinations to enjoy some warmer shores.
Canary Islands, Spain
The Canary Islands are one of Europe’s most reliable winter sun destinations. With average daytime temperatures between 20°C and 24°C from December to February, you can spend your days hiking volcanoes, relaxing on golden beaches or enjoying vibrant local markets.
Best islands for winter sun:
- Tenerife: A mix of lively resorts and quieter villages, plus Mount Teide National Park for hiking.
- Gran Canaria: Known for its sand dunes in Maspalomas and charming old town in Las Palmas.
- Lanzarote: Famous for its volcanic landscapes, Timanfaya National Park and unique wineries.
Travel tip: Budget airlines like Ryanair and easyJet often have low-cost winter flights from the UK. Car hire is affordable if booked in advance (and usually advisable around these islands!).
Madeira, Portugal
Nicknamed the “Island of Eternal Spring,” Madeira boasts lush green landscapes, dramatic cliffs, and temperatures around 19°C in winter. It’s ideal for travellers who enjoy nature, hiking and charming small towns. It’s also known as the Hawaii of Europe! If that doesn’t do it for you, I don’t know what will..
There is one catch though: the weather in Madeira CAN be a bit unpredictable. I still think it deserves a spot here though.
Top things to do in winter:
- Walk the famous levada trails (irrigation channels through mountains and forests)
- Visit Funchal’s farmers’ market for tropical fruit and flowers
- Take the cable car to Monte for panoramic views
Pack a lightweight waterproof jacket, the island is green for a reason!
Malta
This small Mediterranean island country enjoys mild winters with average temperatures of 16°C to 18°C. It’s rich in history with UNESCO-listed sites, charming fishing villages and a beautiful coastline.
Winter highlights:
- Explore the fortified city of Valletta
- Visit Mdina, the “Silent City”
- Take a boat to Gozo for scenic countryside walks
Public transport is affordable but hiring a car can help you see more remote spots.
Cyprus
With winter daytime highs of 17°C to 20°C, Cyprus offers a mix of beaches, ancient ruins and mountain villages.
Why visit in winter:
- Paphos is quieter, yet still sunny and lively
- The Troodos Mountains have hiking trails with incredible views
- Local tavernas offer hearty, affordable Cypriot food which is absolutely delicious!
Crete, Greece
Crete is one of the warmest Greek islands in winter, with temperatures averaging 15°C to 18°C. It’s not beach weather for most people but perfect for sightseeing without the summer crowds.
Winter activities:
- Stroll through Chania’s Venetian harbour
- Explore Knossos Palace without the long queues
- Enjoy traditional Cretan food in cosy tavernas
Many resorts close in winter, so base yourself in larger towns like Chania or Heraklion.
Southern Spain: Costa del Sol & Seville
The Costa del Sol enjoys sunny days and average highs of 17°C to 20°C, making it one of Spain’s most pleasant winter regions.
Top spots:
- Malaga: Street art, tapas bars, and a lively port area
- Marbella: Glamorous marina and beach walks
- Seville: Slightly cooler but perfect for sightseeing. The Alcázar, Cathedral and Plaza de España look even more beautiful without summer heat (and summer crowds!). If you’re a foodie, I must insist you go to La Brunilda…that was a recommendation from my brother and it was out of this world!
- Cadiz: if you’ve got the time while in Seville, you should pop over to Cadiz. The old town is so pretty and the town has such laidback, friendly vibe. I’ll also recommend the wonderful Argentinian spot Meson de las Americas.
Sicily, Italy
Sicily offers around 15°C to 17°C in winter and is ideal for combining history, culture, and food.
What to do:
- Explore Palermo’s street markets
- Visit the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento
- Hike Mount Etna (check weather conditions before going)
Azores, Portugal
The Azores are a little cooler (15°C to 17°C) but still offer a mild escape with volcanic landscapes, hot springs and lush greenery.
Winter highlights:
- Soak in geothermal pools in Furnas
- Whale and dolphin watching tours run year-round
- Explore crater lakes like Lagoa das Sete Cidades
