Winter is often associated with chilly weather and snow. In December we tend to be busy with the holiday season but, once the New Year rolls in and we’re all back to work, life tends to turn a little gloomy. The glow of the season is turned off and winter starts feeling like it’s been around forever; grey and miserable. But if you’re craving sunshine, there are plenty of places in Europe and beyond where you can escape to warmth, even in the colder months. Whether you’re looking for a city break, beach vacation or a cultural escape, here’s a list of top winter sun destinations.
1. Canary Islands, Spain
- Why Visit: A classic winter sun spot, the Canary Islands enjoy year-round sunshine and warm temperatures, even in winter. Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are popular choices.
- Must-Do: Explore the volcanic landscapes, hike Mount Teide or relax on black and golden sand beaches.
- Average Winter Temperature: 18-24°C (64-75°F)
- Where to stay: From stunning mountain golf hotel at Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity to canopy beds at the adults-only Hotel Hacienda de Abajo, luscious mountain views at Hotel Alta Montaña (great for hikers!) or a more lively experience at Boutique Hotel Cordial Plaza Mayor de Santa Ana. You’ll be spoiled for choice at this popular winter sun destination!
2. Madeira, Portugal
- Why Visit: Often called the “Island of Eternal Spring,” Madeira is lush, green and warm throughout the year. Although there’s a catch: the weather can turn at any moment (not that it takes away from any of its breathtaking beauty)
- Must-Do: Hike the Laurisilva forest, visit the stunning coastal cliffs and sample local wine. If you’re on foot but want to explore the island, you can book a full day tour.
- Average Winter Temperature: 17-20°C (63-68°F)
- Where to stay: choose The Cliff Bay if you want an upscale stay with outdoor dining overlooking the water (also close to the CR7 Museum if you’re a fan! You can book a private tour of it here). Or the family-friendly Eden Mar with pool and hot tub for a relaxing stay.
3. Cyprus
- Why Visit: This Mediterranean island offers sunshine and mild temperatures in winter, perfect for exploring ancient ruins and beautiful beaches.
- Must-Do: Visit the ancient city of Kourion, swim at Nissi Beach and stroll through Paphos’ archaeological sites or take a jeep tour of Troodos mountains with wine tasting. For a more relaxing activity, you can book a yacht cruise to Coral Bay!
- Average Winter Temperature: 15-20°C (59-68°F)
- Where to stay: choose an all-inclusive full service experience at the Olympic Lagoon Resort, a fancy beachfront stay at the Four Seasons, the romantic Amavi or the more affordable yet still stylish Columbia Beach Resort
4. Malta
- Why Visit: Malta offers both history and sunshine, making it an ideal winter sun destination with ancient temples, vibrant culture, and crystal-clear waters. Having served as set for several popular films and TV shows (hello, Game of Thrones! Gladiator?!), it’s a popular spot for film & TV buffs.
- Must-Do: Explore Valletta, take a boat to the Blue Lagoon and visit the ancient city of Mdina.
- Average Winter Temperature: 16-20°C (61-68°F)
- Where to stay: Malta Marriott Resort and Spa for some relaxation right on St Julian’s Bay or Valleta and Harbour Views if you prefer apartment stays that are a bit more affordable and allows you to cook at home rather than eat out all the time (it does get a bit much sometimes!). I’m also going to leave a link to The Phoenicia here for the most luxurious stay in a incredibly beautiful building!
5. Crete, Greece
- Why Visit: While Greece may not be the first choice for winter warmth, Crete’s southern location gives it mild winter weather, great for off-season exploring.
- Must-Do: Visit ancient Knossos, hike the Samaria Gorge, and relax in quaint villages.
- Average Winter Temperature: 12-17°C (54-63°F)
- Where to stay: Opt for the Chania Flair Boutique Hotel for the most stunning views, Amirandes Grecotel Boutique Resort for a luxurious beachfront stay (+ a spa and SEVEN restaurants!) or Malmo Historic Hotel for a more cultural stay right in the middle of Chania’s old town.
6. Algarve, Portugal
- Why Visit: The Algarve region in southern Portugal offers some of the best winter weather in mainland Europe. You’ll find beautiful beaches, cliffs and charming fishing villages. Not to mention incredible food!
- Must-Do: Explore the beaches of Lagos, take a boat tour to visit the Benagil Cave and stroll through Faro’s old town. I also highly recommend walking from one beach to the other such as the walk from Baía dos Segredos in Lagos to Ponta da Piedade or the Fisherman’s Trail from Lagos to Luz – I’ve been all over Algarve and that’s where I found my favourite beaches! Bonus tip: if you find yourself at Praia de Porto Mós (between Lagos and Luz), the restaurant O António has super wholesome homemade-like food for incredibly affordable prices! (last I went there a plate of succulent chicken and chips was under £10)
- Average Winter Temperature: 12-18°C (54-64°F)
- Where to stay: I’ve stayed in simple hotels, fancy ones with private beaches, boutique hotels and, so far, one of my favourites has been Hotel Algarve Casino in Portimão (semi-private beach, incredible breakfast buffet with unlimited Mimosa included! and we had a great oceanfront room with private balcony). Another great find was the adults-only more boutique Guest House Dom Manuel I; also incredible breakfast (think about 5 different cakes every morning, different pastries and bakes and outdoor seating). It’s a bit further away from the town centre but we walked up and down with no trouble. Besides, that’s how we found the Fisherman’s Trail which ended up being our favourite area! I’ll also add Belmar Spa & Beach Resort for a closer walk to Praia de Porto Mós.

However, if you’re looking for more down to earth options that’s more middle class-luxury, head to the family-friendly B&B Palazzo Degli Antoci, the boutique hotel Villa Taormina, the beachfront Unìco Boutique Hotel d’Arte in Palermo or a more affordable option, Ballarò Hotel right in the centre of Palermo.

13. Seville, Spain
- Why Visit: Seville is one of the warmest cities in mainland Europe during winter. It offers a mix of cultural landmarks, delicious food and orange-lined streets. I haven’t been all over Spain but, personally, it’s one of my favourite Spanish cities. And, in fact, a lot of other people’s favourites too!
- Must-Do: Visit the Alcázar Palace, enjoy tapas at local bars and stroll through Plaza de España. Don’t miss out on the Mercado de Triana but also, right across the bridge, have some empanadas, croquetas and a cold one at Mercado Lonja del Barranco. For more food markets, I recommend this list from Cultured Voyages. And if you’ve got time, hop on the train to see the lovely beach town Cádiz (and make sure you have the most delicious Argentinian food at Méson de las Américas.
- Average Winter Temperature: 10-18°C (50-64°F)
- Where to stay: There are so many stunning hotels in SeviIle, it’s hard to choose. I loved my stay at Vincci la Rabida which came with a rooftop restaurant offering the most beautiful view of the cathedral as well as a delicious breakfast buffet at the hotel’s beautiful patio. Or you can go for an option with a pool like the usually reliable Radisson or the uber fancy Casa de Triana Luxury Suites by Casa del Poeta.
