This is a post about what you need about UK travel in 2025 and beyond.
Starting this Wednesday 8 January, the United Kingdom will implement a new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for visitors from 48 countries including the United States, Canada, Brazil and Australia. This requirement will also extend to European Union citizens beginning 2 April 2025. But don’t you worry, it’s super simple! Here is what you need to know:

What Is the UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?
The ETA is a digital permission to travel to the UK, designed to enhance border security by pre-screening travellers before they arrive. It is mandatory for visa-exempt nationals visiting the UK for short stays of up to six months for purposes such as tourism, business, short-term study or permitted paid engagements.
Who Needs to Apply for an ETA?
From January 8, 2025: Nationals from 48 countries, including the U.S., Canada, and Australia, must obtain an ETA before traveling to the UK.
From April 2, 2025: European Union citizens will also be required to have an ETA to enter the UK.
Exemptions include
- British and Irish citizens;
- individuals with a valid UK visa and
- residents of Ireland traveling from within the Common Travel Area.
How to Apply for an ETA
Applications can be submitted online or via the UK ETA app. The process involves providing personal and passport details, contact information, and answering security-related questions. Applicants will also need to upload a passport photo and a recent photograph of themselves.
Processing Time and Validity
The application process typically takes about 10 to 20 minutes, with decisions made within three working days. However, you should play safe and apply well in advance of your travel date. Once approved, the ETA is electronically linked to your passport and is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It allows multiple entries to the UK during its valid period.
Cost of the ETA
The ETA application fee is £10 and the fee is non-refundable, regardless of the application’s outcome.
Important Considerations
– Mandatory Requirement: Travellers without a valid ETA may be denied boarding or entry into the UK. It’s crucial to obtain the ETA before your trip to avoid any travel disruptions.
– Not a Visa: The ETA is not a visa. It grants permission to travel to the UK but does not guarantee entry. Upon arrival, Border Force officers will determine entry eligibility.
– Stay Duration: The ETA allows stays of up to six months for tourism, business or short-term study and up to three months for certain work-related activities.
Upcoming Changes in European Travel
In addition to the UK’s ETA, travellers should be aware of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), set to launch in 2025. ETIAS will require non-EU citizens to obtain travel authorisation before visiting Schengen Area countries. This is part of a broader move towards digitising and enhancing border security across Europe.
The introduction of the UK’s Electronic Travel Authorisation system marks a significant change in travel procedures for many visitors. To make sure you don’t have any issues, it’s essential to understand the requirements, apply for the ETA in a timely manner and stay informed about any further updates to travel regulations.
