If you’re in London or coming to the city this September, this is the post for you. London is always such a busy city bustling with tourists and, as a London local, I thought I’d start this monthly series of things to do in town every month. What do you think? Is this something you’d be interested in?

To kick things off, here is a list of some of the best things to do in London in September:
Enjoy the Last of Summer in the Parks
September is one of the best months to enjoy London’s green spaces. The weather is usually mild (but we never really know…it’s always a surprise) and the summer crowds start to thin out. Head to Regent’s Park for late-blooming roses, picnic at Hampstead Heath/Parliament Hill with panoramic city views or take a boat ride on the Serpentine in Hyde Park.
Although if you’re looking for something more active, check out this post with several fun walks around the city or this post taking you through one of the most iconic walks in London.
Take Part in Open House Festival
One of September’s biggest cultural highlights, Open House Festival lets you peek inside 33 of London’s most fascinating and usually off-limits buildings for free. From historic government buildings to striking modern architecture, it’s a rare chance to explore hidden parts of the city. Check the official programme and book popular sites in advance as spots go fast.
It’s on between 13-21 September and bookings will open at 12pm on Wednesday 20 August.
Cruise the Thames at Sunset
With the evenings still light but the air a little crisper, a Thames sunset cruise is an ideal September activity. You can book sightseeing cruises or dinner cruises that pass landmarks like the London Eye, Tower Bridge, and the Shard, perfect for photos.
I use an app called SunCalc to check where the sun is rising and setting all year round and I suggest you download it too! This way you can book sunset outings at the right time (like going up to Sky Garden or Horizon 22!).
Catch a West End Show
London’s theatre scene is incredible year-round, but September is a sweet spot. Summer crowds are gone and new productions often launch in time for autumn. Check sites like TodayTix for last-minute deals or book in advance for classics like The Phantom of the Opera, Hamilton, or Moulin Rouge.
Personally, I highly recommend The Book of Mormon – it’s SO funny!!
Visit the Totally Thames Festival
Running throughout September, Totally Thames celebrates London’s river with art installations, boat races, outdoor performances and guided walks. Many events are free, making it a budget-friendly way to explore the city’s waterways.
Take a Day Trip
Mild weather makes September ideal for day trips from London. Visit the university city of Oxford, the seaside town of Brighton or take a train to the Cotswolds for charming villages and afternoon tea. If you want to go around the Cotswolds area rather than just visiting a village, your best bet is to either hire a car or go with a tour group.
You can either organise it by yourself, in which case I highly recommend Omio for cheap train tickets. Or you can join a group tour if you feel like kicking back and enjoying the ride as well as meeting new people.
If you’re looking for something more nature-based, I have various posts throughout the website about hiking trails and other beautiful day trips near London by train.
Explore London’s Food Markets
September’s seasonal produce is at its peak, making markets even more tempting. Borough Market is a must for foodies, while Maltby Street offers artisanal treats and street food in a more intimate setting. For a more local vibe, try Broadway Market in East London.
I absolutely LOVE a food market! I’m always recommending them to my friends visiting London. In fact, I wrote a post with some of the best food markets in London you can check out.
Experience London Fashion Week
While the official shows are invite-only, London Fashion Week in September often has public events, exhibitions and pop-up shops. Even if you can’t attend a runway show, it’s fun to wander Soho and the Strand area to spot fashionistas and street style photographers.
It’s on between 18-22 September.
Enjoy Early Autumn Colour at Kew Gardens
By late September, Kew Gardens starts to shift into autumn mode, with trees turning golden and ornamental grasses in full sway. Book tickets in advance to skip queues, especially if visiting on weekends.
