London in One Day: The Perfect 1 Day Itinerary for First Time Visitors
If you were to ask me if one day is enough to spend in London, I’d say no, you need at least 4. But if you did have only one, this post is for you.
London is one of the most exciting cities in the world and although you could spend weeks exploring its museums, markets, parks and all the different neighbourhoods, you can still see a surprising amount in just one day. This London 1 day itinerary is designed to help you make the most of a single day in the capital with iconic landmarks, beautiful viewpoints and a mix of culture, food and classic London experiences. Whether you are on a layover or doing a quick weekend trip this guide shows you the best way to see London in a day without rushing through it.
There are many cities with landmarks that I’d skip if I were short on time. London is not really one of them. A lot of these landmarks are iconic for a reason. In fact, I’ve been living in London for over 15 years and, even after all this time, one of my favourite spots is one of the most touristy.

Morning in Westminster: London’s Most Famous Landmarks
Get yourself to Westminster where many of the city’s most iconic sights are within a short walk of each other. If you want to see London in one day, this is the perfect place to begin because it gives you instant views of the postcard highlights.
Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament
Arrive early to beat the crowds and admire Big Ben and the stunning Gothic architecture of the Palace of Westminster. This area gets busy later in the day so mornings are ideal for photos and slow strolling.
For photos, one of the best spots to capture Big Ben from is the island between Great George St and Parliament Sq. Another popular one is across Westminster Bridge, on the South Side. Stick to the right side and go down the steps to the riverside walk. You’ll be right across the Houses of Parliament!
Westminster Abbey
Just a few steps away is Westminster Abbey, the coronation church of British monarchs since 1066. Even if you don’t go inside, it is worth walking around the exterior to admire the history and detail. If you want to visit the interior book tickets ahead to save time but, if you’re only in town for a day, I’d skip it.
Buckingham Palace
From the Abbey follow Birdcage Walk or stroll through St James’s Park, one of the most beautiful parks in London. The walk takes about 15 minutes and brings you straight to Buckingham Palace. If you time your visit well you may catch the Changing of the Guard which usually takes place around 10:45am on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.
Late Morning: Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden
Walk down The Mall towards Trafalgar Square stopping for photos of the red phone boxes, the fountains and Nelson’s Column. Trafalgar Square is a lively public space and home to the National Gallery which has free entry if you want a quick look at masterpieces like Van Gogh and Turner.
Covent Garden
Next head to Covent Garden which is one of the best areas to visit if you only have one day in London. The covered market offers boutique shops, street performers and small eateries plus you are minutes away from Seven Dials and Neal’s Yard. This is a great place for a late morning coffee or a pastry at places like Arôme for their viral honey butter toast (I can confirm – it’s delicious!).
If you want something more substantial, Dishoom is a local favourite and opens early for a hybrid British-Persian breakfast or brunch.
Lunch Around Covent Garden
Your location gives you endless food options and one of the best things to do in London in my humble opinion is to try all the different cuisines. Given you’ve only got a day, I’d say head to Seven Dials Market, one of the best food markets in London, for a quick bite of any of the various cuisines they offer before continuing on with our London 1 day itinerary.
Afternoon: South Bank Walk and River Views
One of the best ways to see London in one day is by walking along the Southbank. It’s one of my favourite spots! Maybe not on a crowded weekend… Cross the river via the Golden Jubilee Bridges with views of the London Eye and the Thames then begin your riverside stroll.
The London Eye
You can choose to ride it or admire it from below. The ride takes about 30 minutes and gives you decent aerial views of the city. If you are short on time skip the queue and focus on the walk instead. Personally, as a Londoner, I don’t recommend it. It’s expensive and you can get great views of the city from other spots like Sky Garden or Horizon 22 and both are free (but get booked up early so plan your visit in advance!)
Southbank Centre and Street Performers
The area near the Southbank Centre is always buzzing with buskers food stalls and local artists. There are also food and drink stalls around if you want to grab anything. Outside the BFI you’ll find the Southbank Book Market selling a wide array of secondhand books.
If you need a bathroom break, this is a great area too: try either the BFI, Royal Festival Hall or National Theatre!
Shakespeare’s Globe and Tate Modern
Continue along the river towards the Globe Theatre and Tate Modern. Both are iconic but if you only have one day in London choose whichever speaks to you most. Tate Modern is free to enter and the Turbine Hall alone is worth a peek!
Late Afternoon: Borough Market and Tower Bridge/Tower of London
From Tate Modern, walk up to the Millennium Bridge for a gorgeous view of St Paul’s Cathedral. Take a moment to admire the dome then continuing on with the riverside walk towards London Bridge.
Borough Market
One of the most iconic food markets in London (dare I say, Europe!). Home to Bridget Jones (literally. Her flat was above the pub The Globe). It does close at 4 so be there by 2:30-3pm the latest to try some of the goodies. I highly recommend you read my London food guide to the best foods to eat in town before you head there!
Tower Bridge
One of London’s most photogenic spots it is especially beautiful later in the day when the light softens over the Thames. I HIGHLY recommend you take More London Plc across the road from London Bridge station for a gorgeous view of Tower Bridge! Then get to the river and continue on until you reach the south side of the bridge.
Tower of London
Cross the bridge to reach the Tower of London. If you have time and interest you can visit it and see the Crown Jewels plus centuries of royal history. However, for a one day London itinerary you can also simply enjoy the exterior and the riverside views.
Evening: Explore the City or Head to a Cosy London Neighbourhood
If you still have energy and time, finish your perfect day in London in one of these evening hotspots:
Option 1: Dinner in Shoreditch
Shoreditch is great for trendy restaurants, street food and casual nightlife. Try Dishoom Shoreditch for an atmospheric dinner or visit Boxpark for quick bites.
Option 2: Dinner in Soho
Personally, I think this is what I’d choose. I LOVE Soho! It’s packed with energy and lots of small restaurants and bars. I’m on a pizza kick at the moment so I’d recommend Ria’s which recently opened a branch on Carnaby Street. You get to see an iconic piece of London and eat the most indulgent Detroit pizza at a really cute spot!
Option 3: Sunset at the Sky Garden or The Shard
If you want a scenic ending to your one day in London, book free tickets to the Sky Garden for panoramic views of the city. Alternatively head to The Shard for cocktails and skyline views.
