We’re about a month away from Valentine’s Day and it’s the perfect occasion to treat your partner to a romantic getaway. And you don’t need to break the bank to create special memories nor go to Paris like everyone else (it IS a great city though!). So I wanted to bring some inspiration in case you want to take advantage of the date (and on a Friday!) as an excuse for a little trip. Europe is brimming with affordable destinations that offer charm, beauty and romance without the high price tag. Here are some of the best budget-friendly options for a Valentine’s Day in Europe:

Romantic Road, Germany
Germany’s Romantic Road offers an idyllic journey through medieval towns and picturesque countryside, perfect for couples looking to explore a storybook-like destination. This one is best done by car but also doable on a group tour.
- Start in Rothenburg ob der Tauber, a well-preserved medieval town with charming streets and romantic viewpoints.
- Visit Neuschwanstein Castle, the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty castle.
- Stop by Dinkelsbühl or Füssen for more quaint charm and cosy local restaurants.
While Germany can be pricey in larger cities, smaller towns along the Romantic Road often have affordable accommodation and dining options. It’s more of a semi-budget-friendly romantic escape. You can make it cheaper by choosing self-catered apartments and making food at home which can obviously be super romantic and intimate too!.

Tirana, Albania
For an ex-off-the-beaten-track turned trendy, affordable destination, consider Tirana, Albania. This vibrant city is rich in history, culture and unexpected romance.
- Take a cable car ride up Mount Dajti for panoramic views and a quiet picnic.
- Stroll through the Grand Park of Tirana, a peaceful green space perfect for couples.
- Discover the city’s quirky street art and enjoy affordable, delicious Mediterranean cuisine.
Albania’s low cost of living ensures that your romantic getaway won’t strain your budget, while its unique charm will leave you with unforgettable memories.
Budapest, Hungary
Often referred to as “Paris without the price tag,” Budapest is a beautiful city full of history and romance.
- Relax at one of the city’s thermal baths, such as the Széchenyi or Gellért Baths.
- Take a sunset cruise along the Danube River for stunning views of the illuminated Parliament Building. Or a night one with Prosecco watching the city lights – so pretty!
- Explore the Buda Castle District and the Fisherman’s Bastion, both offering breathtaking views of the city.
- Visit the stunning New York Cafe (open from 7am til midnight!) – some people claim it’s one of the most beautiful cafes in the world!
- Another free walking tour I highly recommend
Budapest is also known for its affordable dining scene, so you can enjoy a romantic dinner without overspending.
Cappadocia, Turkey
Cappadocia is a unique and magical destination that feels like stepping into a fairy tale, perfect for a romantic yet affordable getaway.
- Take a hot air balloon ride at sunrise to see the region’s iconic rock formations and valleys.
- Stay in a cosy cave hotel, many of which offer stunning views and exceptional hospitality at reasonable prices.
- Explore the Göreme Open-Air Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage site and hike through the picturesque Love Valley.
Turkey’s affordable accommodation and dining options make Cappadocia an excellent choice for a Valentine’s trip that blends adventure and romance. The food is delicious, the people are friendly, the city is stunning!

Prague, Czechia
Prague’s fairy-tale atmosphere makes it a classic destination for couples and its affordability is an added bonus. And it’s compact enough that you can walk all around it.
- Stroll hand-in-hand across the iconic Charles Bridge at sunrise (don’t forget to touch the falling priest statue for good luck!)
- Visit Prague Castle and wander through the charming streets of Mala Strana (Lesser Town)
- Cosy up in a traditional Czech café with a cup of hot chocolate or mulled wine
February is an off-peak time in Prague, so you’ll avoid the usual crowds and get better deals on accommodation.
Colmar, France
Colmar, in the Alsace region, offers a romantic escape with its colourful half-timbered houses and peaceful canals. It’s becoming more and more popular but it’s possibly still not as crowded as its southern not-really-neighbour Annecy.
- Take a boat ride through “Little Venice” for a unique perspective of the town
- Share a wine tasting experience at a local vineyard or wine bar
- Wander through the old town and enjoy the fairy-tale architecture without spending a fortune
Colmar is perfect for couples looking for a quiet and picturesque getaway.
Krakow, Poland
Krakow combines rich history with a cosy, romantic vibe, making it an ideal budget-friendly Valentine’s destination. It might not feel like a Valentine’s Day trip but I actually went there last year with my partner and we had a great time!
- Explore the charming Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site. I highly recommend the free walking tour (don’t forget to tip!)
- Have a wonder through the historic Jewish quarter, Kazimierz, which is now a trendy neighbourhood full of cool little bars and restaurants
- Take a day trip to the mountain town of Zakopane and visit the thermal pools
Accommodation and dining in Krakow are incredibly affordable, allowing you to splurge on experiences like a day trip to the Wieliczka Salt Mine.
Bruges, Belgium
Bruges may be small, but it’s packed with charm and romance. And it’s OH-SO-PRETTY! Belgium is not known for being budget-friendly, but it can surprise you if planned carefully.
- Stroll along the canals and admire the medieval architecture
- Share a Belgian waffle or hot chocolate from one of the local vendors
- Visit the Markt square and climb the Belfry (15€ each) for a stunning view of the city
Bruges is perfect for a short Valentine’s trip where every corner feels like a scene from a storybook.

Ljubljana, Slovenia
Ljubljana is an underrated gem for a romantic and affordable Valentine’s escape.
- Wander along the Ljubljanica River and cross the city’s famous bridges, like the Dragon Bridge and Triple Bridge.
- Visit the hilltop Ljubljana Castle for stunning views of the city.
- Enjoy a romantic dinner at one of the many riverside restaurants that won’t strain your budget.
If you’ve got the time, head over to nearby Lake Bled for an added touch of romance!
Valencia, Spain
For couples looking for a warmer getaway, Valencia offers charm, sunshine and affordability.
- Stroll through the old town and visit the historic Valencia Cathedral.
- Share paella at one of the city’s many restaurants – it’s the birthplace of this iconic dish (here’s the official list of where to grab some straight from the horse’s mouth. Well, Visit Valencia, that is).
- Spend time at the Turia Gardens, a beautiful park perfect for a romantic walk.
Valencia’s mix of history, modernity and Latin vibes make it a hotspot of a Valentine destination.
There are so many more destinations that can make great options for a Valentine’s Day trip in Europe! If you are indeed looking for warmer destinations, here’s a list of winter sun destinations that might be more your vibe.
Tips for a Budget-Friendly Romantic Getaway
