This is a list of things to do for a magical Christmas in London.
Once again, I’m not quite done with Halloween just yet but you’re probably keen on getting a move on with your Christmas holiday plans. London is a magical place during the holiday season! Christmas in London offers visitors a mix of historical charm, luxury shopping and classic Christmas markets. Here’s a first roundup of the best places to experience the Christmas magic across the city. To be honest, there are so many special spots across the city, we might have to make another list or ten.
Just be warned: London at Christmas is PACKED! Well, anytime of the year, really, but especially during the holiday season.
Leadenhall Market
- Location: Gracechurch Street
- Why Go: Known as one of London’s oldest markets, Leadenhall’s historic Victorian architecture feels like stepping into a Dickensian Christmas scene. The market is beautifully adorned with lights and a grand Christmas tree.
- Must-See: Take photos beneath the twinkling lights and the Christmas tree that will no doubt be on display. As above, I’d go for a mid-week early morning stroll.
- Perfect For: A cozy winter walk, festive photos and grabbing a seasonal hot chocolate. And some Harry Potter vibes!
Fortnum & Mason
- Location: Piccadilly
- Why Go: Fortnum & Mason is iconic for Christmas shopping and holiday indulgence. Known for its deluxe hampers filled with gourmet treats, the store transforms during the holiday season into a wonderland of ornaments, gift ideas and seasonal delicacies. It gets BUSY so I’d try a mid-week, early morning visit.
- Must-See: Explore the spectacularly decorated windows and head inside to marvel at the stunning Christmas tree and festive displays.
- Perfect For: Gift shopping, afternoon tea and indulgent Christmas treats.
Covent Garden Christmas Village
- Location: Covent Garden
- Why Go: Covent Garden’s seasonal decorations are an annual highlight, featuring a towering Christmas tree and sparkling lights throughout. The square hosts a mini Christmas village with market stalls and pop-up events.
- Must-See: Explore the daily snow showers and take photos with the giant decorations and mistletoe chandeliers.
- Perfect For: Christmas shopping, snapping photos and warming up with a mulled wine.
Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park
- Location: Hyde Park
- Why Go: Winter Wonderland is a huge Christmas festival featuring markets, an ice rink, circus performances and countless food stalls. You used to be able to just rock up, but it’s got so popular over the years that you have to book now. Tickets are on sale here.
- Must-See: Visit the Bavarian Village for German sausages and beer and check out the Magical Ice Kingdom for stunning ice sculptures.
- Perfect For: Family outings, friends get-togethers and festive food and drink.
Harrods
- Location: Knightsbridge
- Why Go: Harrods is an iconic stop for high-end Christmas shopping, with an extensive selection of luxury gifts and festive decor.
- Must-See: The entire store lights up during the holiday season, with beautifully decorated window displays and themed decorations.
- Perfect For: Christmas shopping, luxury window-shopping and enjoying the Christmas ambiance.
- Bonus tip: while in the area, take a stroll around Sloane Square for some twinkling lights and dressed up fancy shops. (Last year Cartier looked like a giant gift box!)
Selfridges Christmas Shop
- Location: Oxford Street
- Why Go: Selfridges’ Christmas shop opens early in the season and is a real staple of Christmas in London! No wonder it’s featured in classics such as Bridget Jones and Love Actually…It offers everything from ornaments and gift wrap to unique stocking fillers. Each year the store has a new holiday theme for its elaborate window displays.
- Must-See: Browse the Christmas department for holiday decor inspiration and see the creative window displays. Pop down to the food hall for all kinds of treats!
- Perfect For: Holiday decor shopping, gift inspo and experiencing one of London’s busiest shopping area during the festive season. Although Oxford Street is the one known for shopping, Regent Street is way better! And you can take advantage and walk around Carnaby Street, Mayfair and Bond Street. Or head north to Marylebone. Every single one of these areas will be absolutely sparkling!
Somerset House Ice Rink
- Location: Somerset House, The Strand
- Why Go: Somerset House transforms into a magical winter scene with its annual ice rink, a favourite for locals and tourists alike. Skate to the sound of festive tunes and enjoy a warm drink from the Fortnum’s Lodge. Tickets are on sale now.
- Must-See: The rink is open day and night, but evening skates under the lights are particularly enchanting.
- Perfect For: Ice skating, wintery photos and a classic London Christmas experience. You’ll be a stone’s throw away from Covent Garden too. AND the Southbank if you cross over Waterloo Bridge instead (see below for more).
Southbank Centre Winter Market
- Location: Southbank
- Why Go: Still one of my favourite spots in London! Any time of year, there’s always something going on at the Southbank. Walking by the river all the way to London Bridge alone is a wonderful way to take in the city. Not to mention the views: this riverside market offers beautiful ones of the Thames and cityscape.
The Southbank Centre’s Winter Market has a mix of market stalls selling artisan goods, festive food and winter drinks. - Must-See: Try the street food options, including festive German sausages and churros and enjoy the cozy igloos for dining. If you’re looking for a bit more action, Between the Bridges is just a couple of steps away too! An outdoor-ish venue with food, drinks, live music and DJs. Better yet, a lot of their events offer FREE ENTRY
- Perfect For: Strolling along the river, foodies and cozy winter vibes.
- Bonus tip: free clean bathroom at the Royal Festival Hall =)
Greenwich Christmas Market
- Location: Greenwich
- Why Go: Known for its charming atmosphere, Greenwich Market brings festive cheer with stalls selling handmade crafts, gifts and seasonal treats.
- Must-See: Wander the unique artisan stalls and sample international foods, mulled wine and festive pastries.
- Perfect For: Unique gift shopping, delicious treats and supporting small businesses.
The Churchill Arms
- Location: Kensington
- Why Go: Famous for its over-the-top floral displays, this traditional pub goes all-out with Christmas lights and decor each year, making it one of London’s most festive pub experiences.
- Must-See: Visit for a pint and a photo op; the pub becomes a glowing beacon of holiday cheer.
- Perfect For: Drinks with friends, holiday photos and enjoying a quintessentially British Christmas vibe (and, well…Thai food which, personally, I find much more appetising! Shall we do a “best Thai food in London” post next? I’m still searching as two of my old favourites no longer exist. Feel free to drop a recommendation in the comments too!)
